AI writes more of the code, and forward deployed engineers own the decisions around it.
Writing code from a clear description is already cheap, and reviewing, fixing and shipping code are next. What stays with people is deciding what to build, defining what good looks like, and judging whether it is ready to ship.
Engineers used to learn those calls over years of small tickets and reviewed bug fixes. AI now does that lower work, and teams expect fewer engineers to cover more of the upper part. That upper part is the work of a forward deployed engineer: sitting with the customer, deciding what to build, and owning the result in production.
