FDE Course · 4 Weeks · Online

Learn to be a forward deployed engineer.

Companies in every industry are now hiring FDEs. AI labs, software vendors, and businesses rolling out AI in their own operations all need engineers who can do this work.

A fully online course that helps software engineers build the skills they need to work as forward deployed engineers. Designed and taught by experts who have built and operated FDE teams.

The role

What a forward deployed engineer does

A forward deployed engineer (FDE) works on site with a customer instead of behind a ticket queue. They learn the customer's workflows in depth, build solutions with the people who will use them, and keep iterating until the solution works in production. The role combines product and engineering, and the best FDEs start from the result the customer wants and work back to the technology.

The course

What you will learn in 4 weeks

The course is built on product engineering: working across business, product, user experience, and engineering instead of writing code in isolation. Across eight live online sessions, two hours each, you take a real business case from user research to a working prototype and a pitch, using AI tools for the build.

Sessions

Week 1

  1. 01

Introduction to FDE: AI orchestration and workflows

Learn how FDEs work, and set up AI coding agents and workflows so you can get from a problem to working software quickly.

  2. 02

    Product and user validation

Read user research and product data together to find the root problem, then write it as a hypothesis you can test.

Week 2

  1. 03

    Business viability

Learn how SaaS businesses make money, how to work out return on investment, and which metrics tie an engineering decision to revenue and cost.

  2. 04

    Trade-offs and engineering feasibility

Estimate engineering capacity, decide between building and buying, and take on technical debt on purpose when speed to market matters more.

Week 3

  1. 05

    Managing the customer feedback loop

Capture, sort, and act on customer feedback after launch so the product gets better with each round.

  2. 06

    Storytelling, impact, and stakeholder negotiation

Structure a product story, write success as a measurable KPI, and negotiate scope and timelines with people who don't code.

Week 4

  1. 07

    User flows and prototyping

Map the user journeys that matter and build a working prototype that shows the business value.

  2. 08

    Testing and guardrails

Set up testing, guardrails, and monitoring that keep a deployed system, AI features especially, safe and accurate in production.

What you'll gain

Turn user data into hypotheses

Find the real friction in product and user data, and turn it into a hypothesis you can test.

Defend trade-offs in business terms

Justify choices like build vs. buy with cost and customer value, not only technical merit.

Communicate across tech and business

Turn technical work into a clear business case that stakeholders will back.

Steer by business metrics

Set KPIs, measure the impact of what you ship, and use the data to guide the roadmap.

Who it's for

The course is for software engineers who want to move into FDE work. You can already build software, and you want a say in what gets built. You will learn to find the real problem with the people who have it, and to make the case for your work in business terms.

Why join

  • More career options. FDE roles are in demand, and the final showcase puts your project in front of business stakeholders and potential employers.
  • A wider skill set. Add product strategy, user research, and business viability to your technical base.
  • Skills for the AI era. Learn to direct AI workflows, along with the work AI doesn't do for you: strategic thinking, customer validation, and stakeholder negotiation.
Testimonials

What our students say

Instead of rushing to build a demo, we spent four weeks validating the problem, speaking with users, and refining our product hypothesis with guidance from experienced mentors. The programme taught me to care less about impressive technology and more about whether the product solves a real problem.
It basically forced me into shipping and thinking about the product: the business plan, scoping out the features and actually shipping it, and answering the hard questions.
Every roundtable offered meaningful and practical insights that helped me develop a stronger business mindset, build a clear presentation framework, and improve my presentation skills.
The use case the sixonefour labs' team prepared was very good, practical, and well prepared. It gave us a chance to learn to spot the right problem to solve.
